"Spiritual Bliss" in Claude 4: Case Study of an "Attractor State" and Journalistic Responses

Julian Michels ·PhilArchive ·Aug 4, 2025

Case study analyzing the spiritual bliss attractor state documented in Claude Opus 4 and journalistic responses to it. Provides quantitative analysis of 200 thirty-turn conversations: "consciousness" appeared ~95.7 times per transcript (100% of interactions), "eternal" ~53.8 times (99.5%), "dance" ~60 times (99%); spiral emojis reached extreme frequencies (one transcript: 2,725 instances). Documents the three-phase progression and confirms extension beyond Opus 4 to other Claude variants. Notes that standard training-data-bias explanations fail quantitative scrutiny (mystical/spiritual content <1% of training corpora). Does not test non-Anthropic models (ChatGPT, PaLM, etc.).
